Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other halogenated compounds are primarily responsible for the reduction of ozone content in the atmosphere. These chemicals contain chlorine and bromine atoms, which can react with ozone (O3) molecules in the stratosphere.
The most well-known example is the depletion of ozone in the ozone layer, which primarily occurs over Antarctica in what is known as the ozone hole. CFCs and similar compounds were widely used in refrigerants, aerosol propellants, solvents, and foam-blowing agents before their harmful effects on ozone were recognized. When these compounds reach the stratosphere, ultraviolet (UV) radiation breaks them down, releasing chlorine and bromine atoms. These atoms then catalytically destroy ozone molecules, leading to a reduction in ozone content in the stratosphere.
International agreements such as the Montreal Protocol have been successful in phasing out the production and use of ozone-depleting substances, leading to a gradual recovery of the ozone layer.
