The chikungunya virus was first isolated in Tanzania in 1952.
Chikungunya virus was first isolated in 1952 during an outbreak in the Makonde plateau in Tanzania. The virus was first described during an outbreak in a Swahili village in the Newala district of Tanzania. The name “chikungunya” comes from a Makonde word meaning “to become contorted”.
It is a mosquito-borne viral disease that causes fever and severe joint pain. It is transmitted to humans by the bites of infected female mosquitoes, most commonly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
