Volleyball originated in the United States. The sport was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895. Morgan, a physical education director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, created the game as a less strenuous alternative to basketball for his students. Initially called “mintonette,” the game was later renamed “volleyball” due to the nature of the play, where the ball is volleyed back and forth over the net. The sport quickly gained popularity and spread internationally, becoming one of the most widely played team sports in the world.
Originally called mintonette, the origin of volleyball can be traced back to 1895 in Massachusetts, USA. It was created by American William G. Morgan.
