The earliest automobiles, such as those from the late 19th century, often used a form of “planetary transmission” or “epicyclic transmission.” This system allowed the driver to select different speeds by changing gears in a simple manner. Unlike modern transmissions, these early systems were relatively crude but provided the basic functionality needed for varying vehicle speeds.
