Algae play crucial roles in the environment. As primary producers, they form the base of aquatic food chains, providing food and oxygen for numerous aquatic organisms. Additionally, algae contribute to nutrient cycling by absorbing carbon dioxide and nutrients from the water and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. Some species of algae can also serve as indicators of water quality, as their abundance and diversity can reflect changes in environmental conditions such as nutrient levels and pollution.
