Syntax. Syntax studies the rule systems which combine smaller units such as morphemes into larger units such as phrases and sentences. Within generative syntax, prominent approaches include Minimalism, Government and binding theory, Lexical-functional grammar (LFG), and Head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG).
