The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the large intestine. While it was long thought to be a vestigial organ with no function, recent studies suggest that the appendix may serve as a reservoir for beneficial gut bacteria. In the event of a gastrointestinal infection that flushes out the intestinal flora, the appendix can help repopulate the gut with healthy bacteria. However, it is still possible to live without an appendix, as it’s not essential for survival.
