The process by which plants convert sunlight into energy is called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide from the air, and water from the soil to produce glucose (a type of sugar) and oxygen. This process takes place mainly in the leaves of plants, within specialized cell structures called chloroplasts, which contain the green pigment chlorophyll that captures sunlight. Photosynthesis is essential for plant growth and is the foundation of the food chain, as it provides energy for nearly all living organisms.
