The spleen plays a crucial role in the body’s immune system and blood filtration. It filters out old or damaged red blood cells and recycles iron for new blood cell production. The spleen also acts as a reservoir for white blood cells and platelets, helping to fight infections by producing antibodies and removing bacteria from the bloodstream. Despite its importance, the body can adapt to its absence, although people without a spleen may be more prone to infections.
