Serious Mental Illness (SMI) – SMI is a smaller and more severe subset of mental illnesses; SMI is defined as one or more mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder(s) resulting in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities (NIMH).
Serious mental illness refers to mental health conditions that significantly impact a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and often require ongoing treatment and support. Examples include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression. It’s important for individuals with serious mental illness to receive proper care and support from healthcare professionals and loved ones.
