DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-Frequency) is a signaling system used in telecommunications. It assigns unique tone combinations to each key on a telephone keypad. For example, pressing the “1” key would produce a combination of a 697 Hz tone and a 1209 Hz tone. When a key is pressed, specific tones are sent over the telephone line, allowing the telephone system to recognize and interpret the input.
