An abstract class is a class that cannot be instantiated and may contain one or more abstract methods (methods without implementation). It serves as a blueprint for concrete subclasses to implement. Abstract classes are used when defining a common interface for a group of related classes, but the base class itself does not have enough information to provide a complete implementation.
