A derecho is a widespread, long-lived windstorm associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Unlike typical thunderstorms that may produce localized damage, a derecho involves a large area of damaging winds, often exceeding 58 mph (93 km/h) over hundreds of miles.
