In Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper,” there is a depiction of a lute, or more specifically, a type of stringed instrument that resembles a lute, located on the table in front of Jesus. This instrument appears in the painting’s background and is situated near the Apostle Judas Iscariot. Short answer: there isn’t one.
While looking at the painting, there are no lutes, lyres, or flutes. Just bread, wine, and a bunch of stressed-out Apostles.
But maybe you’ve heard of the “Hidden Sheet Music” theory. In 2007, musician Giovanni Maria Pala noticed that if you treat the bread and the Apostles’ hands as notes on a staff, they make a 40-second somber melody.
So yes, no actual instruments but maybe a secret Leonardo-style song hiding in plain sight.
