This sensation is known as a hypnic jerk, and it’s a common experience as you transition from wakefulness to sleep. It’s thought to occur when your muscles relax and your brain misinterprets this as a sign that you’re falling. In response, your body jolts awake to protect you from a fall, even though you’re perfectly safe in bed.
