Eutrophication is primarily caused by the excessive input of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, into water bodies. These nutrients often come from agricultural runoff, wastewater discharge, and industrial effluents, leading to overgrowth of algae and other aquatic plants, depletion of oxygen, and deterioration of water quality.
