Meiosis is a type of cell division that produces gametes (sperm and egg cells) with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell, while mitosis is a cell division process that produces two daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. Meiosis involves two rounds of division (meiosis I and meiosis II) and results in genetic variation due to crossing over and independent assortment, whereas mitosis involves only one round of division and results in identical daughter cells.
