Trepanation, the practice of drilling or scraping a hole into the skull, was used by several ancient civilizations, including the Incas, Egyptians, and early humans in various parts of the world. The purpose of trepanation was often to treat head injuries, relieve pressure from skull fractures, or to address mental health issues by releasing “evil spirits” believed to cause illness.
