Aerobic fermentations require the continuous addition of considerable quantities of sterile air (see Chapter 9). The broadly quoted aeration rate used in a typical fermentation is one volume of air per volume of medium per minute. Thus, a 100 m3 antibiotic fermentation may need up to 100 m3 of sterile air per minute.
