The average salinity of seawater is about 35 grams per kilogram (g/kg) of seawater, or 35 ppt. Seawater generally ranges from 33 ppt to 38 ppt. Freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams contain some dissolved matter—1 ppt or less (Fig. 2.12 A).
