The Aligarh Movement was started by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in the 19th century. It aimed to promote modern education among Muslims in India and to modernize their socio-political and cultural practices. The movement led to the establishment of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which later became the Aligarh Muslim University.
