    The temple is dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort, Sundareshwar, a form of Shiva. The belief is that the location of the temple is the place where Lord Shiva assumed the form of Sundareswarar (the handsome one) and married Parvati (Meenakshi)
