Cord blood stem cell preservation is a process where Cord blood stem cells are taken from the umbilical cord during the delivery of a baby and stored in the cord blood bank. Earlier, our grandparents stored this umbilical cord in silver for newborns to avoid any earlier disease. Nowadays many parents store their children’s stem cells for future use.
Pros: These stem cells can treat immune disorders, anemia, and cancer. It can be used by their siblings, parents, and grandparents if their HLA (Human Leukocyte Match) match.
Cons: No one knows what the future holds. For now, researchers only hope these stem cells can treat many life-threatening conditions theoretically. AAP ( American Academy of Pediatrics) doesn’t recommend this routine private bank blood storage unless there is a sibling in need of stem cells with disease. Also its not affordable by many families.
