The Human Poverty Index (HPI) was first launched in the Human Development Report (HDR) in the year 1997. It was introduced as a complementary measure to the Human Development Index (HDI), focusing specifically on the deprivation in the dimensions of human development, such as life expectancy, education, and standard of living.
