Steel is more elastic than rubber because it has a higher Young’s modulus of elasticity. Young’s modulus is the ratio of stress applied to a material to the strain it creates. When the same amount of stress is applied to steel and rubber with the same cross-sectional area, rubber stretches more than steel, creating a larger strain. A larger strain means the material is less elastic. The Young’s modulus of elasticity for steel is 200 GPa, while rubber’s is 0.01 GPa. Elasticity is determined by how quickly a material returns to its original shape after an external force is removed. When a force is applied to steel, it deforms but immediately returns to its original shape. In contrast, rubber deforms easily with a small amount of force.
