Tectonic plates are large segments of the Earth’s lithosphere that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. Earthquakes occur primarily at the boundaries where these plates interact. When plates collide, slide past each other, or pull apart, they create stress that can cause the Earth’s crust to fracture, leading to earthquakes.
