Paper was first made in Lei-Yang, China by Ts’ai Lun, a Chinese court official. In all likelihood, Ts’ai mixed mulberry bark, hemp and rags with water, mashed it into pulp, pressed out the liquid and hung the thin mat to dry in the sun.

The ancient Chinese developed papermaking during the Han Dynasty, around the 2nd century BCE. The process involved breaking down plant fibers, such as bamboo, hemp, and mulberry bark, into a slurry and then pressing it into thin sheets. This technique, attributed to Cai Lun, improved the quality and efficiency of writing materials compared to previous methods like bamboo slats or silk. The invention of paper revolutionized record-keeping, literature, and education, and it spread to other cultures, profoundly impacting communication and knowledge dissemination throughout history.
