The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This protocol aims to ensure the safe handling, transport, and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biodiversity. It specifically addresses the potential risks posed by LMOs to biological diversity and human health. The Cartagena Protocol was adopted in 2000 and supplements the CBD, providing a framework for countries to make informed decisions regarding the import and export of LMOs.
