The endocrine system is a network of glands and organs that produce and secrete hormones, chemical messengers that regulate numerous physiological processes in the body. Key components of the endocrine system include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gonads. Hormones are released into the bloodstream and act on target cells or tissues to control functions such as growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, and stress response.
