Neurons are specialized cells in the nervous system that transmit electrical and chemical signals. They consist of a cell body (soma), dendrites (which receive signals from other neurons), an axon (which transmits signals away from the cell body), and synaptic terminals (which transmit signals to other neurons or cells). Neurons function by generating and transmitting electrical impulses, allowing for communication within the nervous system.
