The revolt of 1857, also known as the First War of Indian Independence, was sparked by a range of factors and grievances, but a significant trigger was the introduction of the Enfield rifle. The rifle used cartridges greased with animal fat, which offended both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. This led to widespread discontent among the sepoys (Indian soldiers) in the British East India Company’s army.

The revolt began in Meerut on May 10, 1857, when sepoys rebelled against their British officers. The rebellion quickly spread across northern and central India, involving many different groups and leaders. One notable leader of the revolt was Mangal Pandey, whose actions at Barrackpore in March 1857 are often cited as a catalyst for the larger uprising.
