Fundamental modes of vibration refer to the simplest types of vibrations that a physical system can exhibit. These modes are essential in understanding the behavior of structures and mechanical systems under dynamic loads. Here are the various fundamental modes of vibration commonly analyzed in different types of structures:

    1. Transverse Vibrations
Transverse vibrations occur when particles of the structure move perpendicular to the length of the structure. This is commonly seen in beams and strings.

Fixed-Fixed Beam: A beam fixed at both ends exhibits multiple modes of transverse vibration. The first mode has a single antinode in the middle, the second mode has two antinodes, and so on.
Cantilever Beam: A beam fixed at one end and free at the other exhibits transverse vibrations with the first mode having the maximum deflection at the free end.
    2. Longitudinal Vibrations
In longitudinal vibrations, particles of the structure move parallel to the length of the structure. This is common in rods and columns.

Rod: A rod fixed at both ends will vibrate longitudinally with nodes at the fixed ends and an antinode in the middle for the first mode.
