In 1173, Ghori launched a systematic attack to expand his rule into north India, creating his kingdom. After Ghori’s death in 1206, one of his Turkic mamluks, Qutb al-Din Aibak, became the first sultan of Delhi, reigning from 1206–1210. Aibak marked the beginning of the Mamluk (slave dynasty) rule and laid the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate period. The Delhi Sultanate was a late medieval empire that stretched over large parts of the Indian subcontinent for 320 years (1206–1526). It ended in 1526 when Ibrahim Lodi lost the battle of Panipat to Babur.
