Gneiss can form from either igneous or sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks, like shale, must undergo several phases before they become gneiss. Gneiss formed from sedimentary rocks is called paragneiss. Gneiss can also form from igneous rocks, like granite or diorite.
