In 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin began developing a search engine called “Backrub” while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. This early search engine was notable for its use of backlinks to rank web pages. In 1997, they registered the domain name “google.com”.Eventually, the name “Google” replaced “Backrub” as the company’s official name when it was incorporated in September 1998.
