The electron was discovered by J.J. Thomson, a British physicist, in 1897. Thomson was conducting experiments with cathode rays inside a vacuum tube, similar to the ones used in early television sets. He observed that these rays could be deflected by electric and magnetic fields in a manner that was consistent with them being made up of negatively charged particles. Thomson called these particles “corpuscles,” but they were later named electrons. His discovery of the electron revolutionized our understanding of atomic structure and laid the foundation for the field of particle physics.
The electron was discovered by British physicist J. J. Thomson in 1897. He was studying mysterious “cathode rays” and found that they were actually made of tiny particles with a negative electric charge. What’s really interesting is that this was one of the first major clues that atoms weren’t indivisible after all.
Before Thomson, many scientists thought atoms were the smallest possible pieces of matter. His discovery showed that atoms had smaller parts inside them. He even measured the electron’s charge-to-mass ratio, helping scientists understand just how incredibly light it is. Basically, Thomson cracked open the atom—and kicked off a whole new era of modern physics!
