The offside rule is a fundamental aspect of soccer, designed to prevent players from gaining an unfair advantage by positioning themselves closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is played to them. If a player is deemed offside when the ball is played to them, they will be penalized with an indirect free kick for the opposing team.
