A Butterworth filter is a type of electronic filter designed to have a frequency response as flat as possible in the passband while rolling off smoothly in the stopband. It belongs to the family of infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, characterized by its maximally flat magnitude response in the passband and gradual attenuation in the stopband.
