Mendelian genetics describes the inheritance of traits controlled by single genes with distinct alleles. The principles include segregation (during gamete formation, alleles segregate randomly into gametes), independent assortment (genes on different chromosomes assort independently during gamete formation), and dominance (some alleles are dominant over others, determining the phenotype).
