Detail: Alexander Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist, discovered penicillin in 1928. While conducting experiments with Staphylococcus bacteria, he noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum inhibited the growth of the bacteria, leading to the discovery of the first antibiotic.
