The Krebs cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle, is a key metabolic pathway that takes place in the mitochondria. Its purpose is to generate energy through the oxidation of acetyl-CoA, producing NADH and FADH2, which are then used in the electron transport chain to generate ATP.
