New words have to circulate in culture to make it into the dictionary. They have to be used and understood. Words have a much better chance of getting added to the dictionary if you see them in print or hear them in conversation.
New words get added to dictionaries when they’re used widely and consistently over time. Dictionary editors keep track of how language is evolving and look at how often new words are used in books, articles, and everyday conversation. If a word sticks around and proves to be useful, it gets included. For example, words like “selfie” and “emoji” have made their way into dictionaries because they’ve become part of our daily lives.
