Although Atreya and Agnivesa dealt with the principles of Ayurveda in 800 BC, Charaka Samhita is credited with the first Ayurvedic compilation. He was the first physician to posit the concepts of digestion, metabolism and immunity. He studied the human body and offered various remedies for numerous diseases.
Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine in ancient India, made several key contributions to health and wellness. Ayurveda emphasizes the balance of three doshas (body energies) — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — and uses various herbs, diet, and lifestyle practices to maintain this balance. Key texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita outline detailed knowledge of herbal remedies, surgical techniques, and holistic health practices. Ayurveda also introduced practices like Panchakarma (a detoxification process) and various forms of massage and yoga that are still widely used today. Its comprehensive approach to health has had a lasting influence on both traditional and modern medicine.
