The Drakensberg mountain range is located in South Africa.
The Drakensberg Mountains, meaning ‘Dragon Mountains’ in Afrikaans, are the highest mountains in South Africa, ranging up to 3,482 m (11,422 ft) in height. In isi-Zulu, the language of the Zulu People, they are called “uKhahlamba”, the ‘barrier of spears’.
They are drained on the west by the Orange and Vaal rivers, and on the east and south by a number of smaller rivers, the Tugela being the largest.
Famous for its hiking routes, the Berg is also famous for the rock art left behind by the San people with literally thousands of individual images from around 500 sites, some dating back around 2,400 years.
The Drakensberg is one of the world’s most critical erosional mountains. It was also almost declared a World Heritage Site as a result of this fact.
