The Portuguese gave Bombay (now Mumbai) to King Charles II of England as part of his dowry when he married Catherine of Braganza in 1661. The marriage treaty was signed on June 23, 1661, and the dowry was given on July 3, 1661. The dowry also included the seven islands of Bombay and Tangier.
Bombay was handed over to the British by the Portuguese in 1668 as part of the marriage treaty between Catherine of Braganza and King Charles II of England.
