Rio de Janeiro is the South American City known for its Carnival festival.
Every year, this huge exuberant spectacle begins 40 days before Easter and represents 5 days of celebrations. Millions of Brazilians and visitors who travel here from around the world come to experience this extravaganza.
The first Carnival was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1723. The custom is believed to have originated in Greece, but was adapted by the Roman Catholic church and Portugal to celebrate the beginning of the season of Lent. Masks were a tradition brought over from Portugal in the 1840s and samba was introduced in 1917.
