Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the first person to resign from the central cabinet. He held the position of the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee (6 July 1901 – 23 June 1953) was noted for his opposition to Quit India movement within the independence movement in India.
After breaking up with the Hindu Mahasabha, he joined Nehru’s cabinet.
Mookerjee resigned , protesting against the Liaquat–Nehru Pact. With the help of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951.
The first central cabinet minister to resign in India was Shri Jagjivan. He resigned from the Union Cabinet on March 12, 1977, following the declaration of the Emergency in India in 1975. Jagjivan Ram was then the Minister of Defence, and his resignation was significant as it marked a protest against the oppressive measures of the Emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
