Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, died Jan. 16, 2017. Captain Cernan was one of fourteen astronauts selected by NASA in October 1963.
Eugene Andrew Cernan was the last human to walk on the Moon.
Cernan left his mark on the history of exploration by flying three times in space, twice to the moon. He also holds the distinction of being the second American to walk in space.
He was an astronaut, naval aviator, electrical engineer, aeronautical engineer, and fighter pilot. During the Apollo 17 mission, the mission commander Cernan became the 11th human being to walk on the Moon. He re-entered the Apollo Lunar Module after Harrison Schmitt on their third and final lunar excursion.
