Mexico City has been called like that since the place was first “occupied” by Spaniards. Founded and named “Mexico City” (“Ciudad de Mexico”) by Hernan Cortez in 1521. So Mexico City is the original name. The name of Mexico City was used to name the entire country after independence (“Mexican Empire”).
