Lactose is a disaccharide sugar found in milk and dairy products. Its chemical formula is C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁, which indicates it consists of 12 carbon atoms, 22 hydrogen atoms, and 11 oxygen atoms. Lactose is formed by the condensation of one molecule of glucose and one molecule of galactose. In the body, it is broken down by the enzyme lactase into these two simpler sugars to be absorbed and used for energy.
